To walk the entire length of all Class A roads (139 miles) and all Class B roads (101 miles), figures courtesy of the Shetland Islands Council. The national outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in 2001, though far from Shetland, placed severe restrictions on access to agricultural ground. It seemed an ideal time to start walking the roads. My first dedicated walk took place from the north Fladdabister junction to the Moor Park Family Golf Centre, near Gulberwick, the last from the communications building south of Uskister, Fetlar, to the bridge over the Burn of Aith, by Aithbank, in the same island.
Project completed.
